La FIFA anunció este lunes su decisión de emplear el diagnóstico de imagen por resonancia magnética (MRI, por sus siglas en inglés) de la muñeca para controlar la edad de los jugadores que disputarán el Mundial Sub-17 de 2009, que comenzará en octubre en Nigeria.
El fundamento de dicha medida, indicó la FIFA en un comunicado de prensa, es el de "proteger la integridad del Mundial y el espíritu de juego limpio".
Este tipo de diagnóstico por resonancia magnética, también conocido como "prueba de la muñeca", que permite evaluar el desarrollo y maduración del esqueleto para determinar la edad de una persona, se practicará a jugadores del Mundial elegidos al azar bajo la supervisión de médicos de la FIFA.
"Un MRI de la muñeca puede señalar qué futbolistas han superado los 17 años", explica la nota enviada por la FIFA a los medios, que además destaca la fiabilidad y seguridad del test para los jugadores, y recalca que ha sido desarrollado por el Centro de Evaluación e Investigación Médica de la FIFA (F-MARC) y probado en distintos grupos étnicos de población.
Asimismo, la FIFA recomendó que sean las propias asociaciones que participan en el Mundial las que realicen esta prueba a sus equipos en la fase preparatoria del torneo, para garantizar que ninguno de sus jugadores nació antes del 1 de enero de 1992, límite de edad establecido para disputar el Campeonato.
